Finally, you have your high school diploma in your pocket! Now you just have to deal with the small question of how you want to shape your future professional career. Basically, you have to decide between an apprenticeship, a course of study or a dual course of study. To make your choice easier, we have summarized the most important information for each option.
The training
If you like things practical and don't have much to do with science, an apprenticeship is ideal. To do this, you first have to decide on a specific career and then find a suitable company that will train you. You can convince them with the help of your meaningful application documents. You can find out what these should look like in our article Applying as a graduate , which is also helpful for high school graduates.
You still have no idea which training would be right for you? Then you can take a test to choose your career here.
Specialist or master’s course?
In a training course, manageable content is applied practically. After you graduate, you will have a recognized professional title and can make your way into the world of work. If that's not enough for you, you can always add a suitable course of study.
However, this step is only one possible option, because instead you could also do further training at the IHK, for example a specialist or master's course. Industrial foremen in particular occupy a very important position in companies. An example of this would be the training to become industrial masters in electrical engineering at the IHK , who are trained as industrial-technical managers with advanced business knowledge and are currently in high demand on the professional market. As an industrial foreman, you are responsible, among other things, for the smooth running of the work process, for the staff and for product quality. You will therefore hold a managerial, respected position with a variety of tasks.
Would you like to know where there are still vacancies for your dream job? Then it's best to check with the IHK .
The study
If you like to deal with questions in depth and don't throw your legs up in the air when it comes to complex thought constructs, studying could be just the right thing for you. When you study, you will be taught scientific content that is primarily theoretical in nature - depending on the type of study. You start with a bachelor's degree, which usually lasts three years, and then - if you want - you can add a master's degree, which lasts two years. If you like academic work, there is also the possibility of an academic career. In addition, you have to complete a doctorate and, in many cases, a habilitation.
If you don't have any specific ideas about what you could study, here are some useful tips . You can research almost all study options in Germany in this helpful list .
Training-integrated dual study course
If you can't decide whether you would rather study or do an apprenticeship, you have the opportunity to combine both with the training-integrated dual course of study. As a rule, you will take an IHK exam and a bachelor's degree within your training period. This model balances theory and practice nicely and gives you more options when it comes to choosing a job later.
