Welcome money
East German cities once lured young students to their catchment areas with welcome money. Today it is no longer just East German cities, but there are cities throughout Germany that attract new citizens with the welcome bonus.
If you register as a new resident in your university city, you can collect up to €250.
Berlin
Berlin students who moved their main residence to Berlin after March 19, 2002 will receive a one-time welcome allowance of €50.

The city of Braunschweig pays its students an immigration bonus of €200 for students from the Technical University, the HBK and the Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences who register their main residence in Braunschweig for the first time.
