Fabric on fabric on fabric! The professor is once again completely overdoing it and doesn't want to rule out absolutely anything for the upcoming exam. You can never learn everything! When a fellow student expresses your thoughts out loud, the lecturer immediately squashes her, whereupon the person sitting next to her murmurs quietly: "It's not good to eat cherries with him."
In what context do you use the phrase?
“So and so is not good for eating cherries” is said when someone is considered a difficult person, for example a strict teacher or a mean neighbor. So it is used when you don't get along well with someone.
How did the phrase come about?
The saying goes back to the Middle Ages, when cherries were still a real rarity. The sweet fruit was so expensive that only those in higher society could afford it. Because cherries were so special, people often met up to eat them together. However, if unwanted guests were present, they were spat at with cherry stones and cherry stems until they fled.
