Wie du mit wenig Geld eine Weltreise machst

How to travel around the world with little money

Who doesn't dream of traveling around the world at least once in their life, exploring country after country for months, far from their familiar homeland? Sure, pretty much everyone, and if it weren't for one small problem, many would immediately pack their bags - the dear money. After all, a tour like this around the globe costs a lot and hardly anyone can afford it, especially not students. Or is it? We have five tips for you on how you can travel around the world with little money.

1. Avoid expensive countries

Traveling around the world doesn't necessarily mean having to visit every country on our blue planet in one go. If you don't want to spend a lot, you should plan your route carefully and avoid expensive places like the USA, Canada, Japan or Australia. In countries like South America, Africa or Asia, however, living costs are much lower, so you have more money.

2. Bus instead of plane

No question, flying is great, but it costs a lot of money. Therefore, it is better to choose the longer option and take the bus. This offers two advantages: firstly, you save valuable euros that you will still need anyway and secondly, you see so much more of the country you are currently traveling through. South America, for example, has a very well-developed bus route network, even across national borders. A trip can take up to 28 hours, but you get to see as much of the landscape as possible.

If flying is unavoidable, then it should at least be a flight with savings for students, right? The best advice for this is Opodo: Opodo offers cheap flights and regular vouchers for students.

3. Hostel instead of hotel

If you want to have the right backpacking experience and, above all, save money, you should quickly cross luxury accommodation off your planning list. Hostels are almost always cheaper than hotels, especially if you choose a shared room instead of a single room. However, don't forget your international friends - perhaps one or two ERASMUS acquaintances will have a sofa for you. If you're not afraid of strangers, you can also couch surf and stay overnight (usually) for free.

4. Cooking instead of a restaurant

Sure, in Asian or South American countries you will be offered culinary delicacies at penny prices at countless food stalls or bars - so the purchase is definitely worth it. However, if you are on more expensive continents, dining in restaurants can quickly add up. It's best to cook yourself: get what you need from the local supermarket and secure a place in the kitchen of your hostel; almost everyone is equipped with one. With a full stomach, you can move on to your next destination.

5. Work & Travel

Traveling around the world doesn't mean lazing around on the beach all day. If you don't mind a little work, you can earn a little extra money à la Work & Travel.
