Why always wander into the distance? If you're longing for a vacation, you don't necessarily have to get on a plane, you can just as easily explore our beautiful home of Germany. This has some pretty spots to offer and is also easy on your wallet. To make your choice easier, we have agreed on five unique travel destinations in Germany that are definitely worth a visit.
1. Saxon Switzerland
Let's start with a travel destination that will set hearts racing, especially among hikers and nature lovers: Saxon Switzerland, a wonderful area along the Elbe with countless climbing areas and a national park, has over 1,000 mountain peaks to climb. Breathtaking views are guaranteed here, and the bastion in particular should be visited. There is a bridge between two stone towers including viewing points. Free climbing began in Saxon Switzerland, but amateur climbers and regular hikers will also have a lot of fun here.
2. Azalea and Rhododendron Park Kromlau
Do you love beautiful parks and flowers? Then off to Kromlau, the largest park in Saxony. It was commissioned by Friedrich Herrmann Rötschke in the middle of the 19th century. The absolute highlight in Kromlau, however, is not a plant, but a building: the Rakotz Bridge looks like it comes from the Lord of the Rings - or at least from the Middle Ages. It was only built in the 1860s and became famous due to its extremely round shape. It is reflected in the water of the Rakotzsee below, forming a complete circle. A real fairytale bridge - which, however, is not allowed to be entered.
3. Neuschwanstein Castle
King Ludwig II of Bavaria was known for his lavish lifestyle and his unique castles, especially Neuschwanstein. The impressive structure is located above Hohenschwangau near Füssen in southern Bavaria and the location itself is incredible: it is surrounded by high cliffs and stands alone in the surrounding area, so that it can only be reached by bus or horse-drawn carriage. The palace was Ludwig's homage to Richard Wagner, which is also reflected in the individual rooms.
4. Königssee
A true natural paradise is located in Berchtesgadener Land in beautiful Bavaria. Countless hiking trails and via ferratas in picturesque landscapes are guaranteed to delight every nature freak. The highlights include the Watzmann, a mountain that is part of the Bavarian Alps, and the crystal-clear Königssee. A boat tour across Bavaria's deepest lake invites you to dream, the water invites you to swim - but that's only for the hard-core, because the Königssee is downright icy, even in summer.
5. Heligoland
North Sea is only for pensioners and spa guests? Are you kidding me? Are you serious when you say that! Our far north has sea, great landscapes and tons of clean air to offer, so you won't be bored for a minute. How about a visit to Heligoland, for example? Germany's only deep-sea island lies around 70 kilometers off the coast, the harbor is flanked by colorful lobster stalls and a pretty promenade. Anyone who ventures along the cliff path will be rewarded with a magnificent view. There are also picturesque lighthouses and cute gray seals to observe in the wild. Anyone who loves fresh fish and seafood will not be able to stop feasting on Heligoland. Oh yes – you can also shop duty-free on the North Sea island.
