Warum sagt man eigentlich “Mönch”? (#188)

Why do we actually say “monk”? (#188)

Monks usually live an ascetic life behind monastery walls and meditate, but monks practicing martial arts and warriors are also not uncommon.
The origin of the word is based on their main activity: the Greek “monachos” was derived from the Greek “monos” (“single, alone”), which meant “hermit”. The term came into the Germanic language family via the Latin forms “monachus” and “monicus”. The English still say “monk” and the Dutch “monnik”. In German it still took a few language levels. From “munih” to “mön ch” and “mün ch” we finally ended up with “Mönch”.
