Warum sagt man eigentlich “Cockpit”? (#179)

Why do we actually say “cockpit”? (#179)

Today it will be hard and bloody, because even though the word cockpit sounds so harmless, its origin story is by no means so. Translated into German, cockpit means “cockpit”. This was not only the first name for the cockfighting arena, it was also jokingly called the hospital for the wounded on the English warships of the 18th century (because things were so bloodthirsty there). This was usually right at the front of the bow.
Cockpit really became established as the name for the pilot's cockpit in aircraft during the First World War. The fuselage of the warplanes was still open at that time. And the fighting cock, or fighter pilot, sat down in it.
