Seven myths about online security

There are numerous serious IT threats, but there are also a number of data security myths that need to be dispelled. Here you can see seven classics.

1. The secure Mac

Believe it or not, the first computer virus was discovered on a Mac. That was in 1982. But since then, Apple computers have been considered completely safe from intrusion attempts and malware. This myth is based on Apple's biggest operating system rival, Microsoft Windows, which regularly exhibited extreme vulnerabilities. So while it's true that Macs were safe in comparison, they are far from waterproof. These days, OSX is a popular target for intruders because many users still believe their Macs are safe and don't worry about security software.

2. The risk of an attack is low

The Internet is huge. Why would someone target my computer or phone right now? Of course, the reality is completely different. In very few cases, hackers select their victims individually and only after careful consideration. Attacks take place on a large scale and with the help of automated tools. The image of a pimply nerd in a dark basement who unintentionally starts World War III is an outdated cliché. Today's computer attacks are carried out systematically by well-organized groups equipped with sufficiently competent resources. On average, an unprotected computer connected to the Internet is attacked within seven minutes.

3. Firewall + Antivirus = comprehensive protection

There is no such thing as 100% protection. In fact, antivirus software and a firewall make it difficult for an intruder to access your information, but you as a user also need to take proactive measures yourself. Updating and patching your software against vulnerabilities are two of these things you can do yourself.

4. There's nothing to get from me anyway

This is a misconception! It's very likely that your data is far more valuable than you think. Passphrases, addresses, phone numbers, credit card details, and other information are often stored in your computer's cache. It is also very easy to create a profile about you by reading your emails and evaluating your browsing history. This is a common method used by cybercriminals to steal your identity. To protect sensitive data such as your account information, you should definitely use banking protection software such as F-Secure SAFE , which pops up whenever websites where banking and transactions can be made are visited. This way you can protect yourself from Trojans that nest in your computer and wait for the user to do online banking and, in the worst case scenario, drain your savings.

5. Apps are more secure than a browser

Apps promote a false sense of security. Only psychologists can probably explain why this is the case, but it's probably because apps don't have a traditional vulnerable browser. However, apps are connected to the Internet in the same way, just in a new package. And if you think your phone is safe from prying eyes, then you're wrong. There are numerous times when we accept an app permission, thereby giving access to everything from our photo galleries to our Facebook account. By letting apps access the location data on our phone, they know exactly where we are.

6. My WiFi cannot be hacked if I hide it

It's true that most routers offer the ability to make your network "invisible." This makes people believe that if no one can see their network, no one can hack their connection. Because if someone intends to hack your WiFi, they will most likely also have the technical know-how and know that most networks are hidden. And hackers certainly have the skills to make your network visible again, even if you have hidden the network name.

7. Protection software makes my computer slower

That was right. Antivirus software could slow down a computer by up to 50%, making everyday use a nuisance. However, modern software is significantly more resource-efficient. Nowadays, you most likely won't even notice that you have security software installed.
