Mit Smartphone auf dem Klo: Keine Seltenheit

Mobile surfing in the toilet: When and where do students use their cell phones?

Mobile surfing in the toilet: When and where do students use their cell phones?

“I forgot my cell phone” – this simple sentence means the inevitable end of many ventures. You can only take snaps with your smartphone, regularly enrich your Instagram profile with pictures and send WhatsApp messages. The question arises: When do we use our smartphone the most? Uniplaces, an online portal for arranging student accommodation, took a look and conducted a survey with European students. The result: you want to laugh and cry.

Always online

More than half of all respondents – to be more precise: 60.73 percent – said they looked at their smartphone while on the go. And by on the go we mean: while running. Surely you know what it's like - getting out of the house, putting headphones in your ears and scrolling for the right music for the way to university. The time you spend on your smartphone is completely normal. Meanwhile, the messages come in from the group chat, the news pops up and everything takes its course. Put your cell phone away? Sure - just have to check the email from the professor...

It is not surprising that more than half of people use their smartphone on public transport, be it the train, bus or train. But that's not all: even in this once quiet place, the cell phone has no access barrier. In the past, when people were bored, they reached for the shampoo bottle to entertain themselves while going to the toilet (you know: the ingredients were never so exciting!), but today the cell phone takes over this task.

More than half said: I also use my cell phone in the toilet

Yes. A total of 53.14 percent use their smartphone in the toilet. Some people no longer even notice how time flies. It used to be quicker somehow: pants down, pee, pants back up. Today you take your time and almost enjoy going to the toilet because: finally a few minutes of peace. Just the cell phone, the toilet and me. When all messages have finally been answered, emails checked, Facebook and Instafeed scrolled through and Snapchat checked for news, it would actually be time to go to the toilet again. Only – you’re already there. So what the heck – just check Facebook again in these fast-moving times.

The most popular places for smartphone use in a quick check

It is hardly surprising that the toilet occupies one of the leading ranks. You can see where the cell phone is also very popular here:

  1. 60.73 percent use their cell phone while running
  2. 55.30 percent on public transport
  3. 53.14 percent don't go without their smartphone even in the toilet
  4. 49.15 percent also use their cell phones while eating
  5. 35.73 percent are only too happy to be distracted by their smartphone while learning

Apps without which nothing works

The smartphone only becomes the leisure entertainment device it is through the implementation of popular apps: you don't want some apps, you need them. Point.

It's no surprise that 40.86 percent of people consider WhatsApp to be THE app they can't do without. Maintain contact with friends, ask mom for advice, talk about the annoying professor in the group chat - WhatsApp makes it possible.

However, only 27.61 percent - almost one in four - see Facebook as essential, followed by YouTube in a very weak third place.

Uniplaces

Interesting insights from an equally interesting website – Uniplaces helps international students get the right accommodation as quickly, safely and easily as possible. Both searchers and landlords benefit from this: professionalism and security are very important here. No wonder, given the top support: Investors include Octopus Investments and the founders of Zoopla and LOVEFiLM. Interested? Then find out more at www.uniplaces.de.
