Melanie tested the OMEN by HP 15-dc0700ng worth €1234.05 for three weeks and reports below about her experiences as well as the advantages and disadvantages she discovered during her testing phase:
During the four-week test phase, I was able to take a closer look at the HP OMEN gaming laptop and try out various features. Since I usually play and work on a PC tower, I was very curious to see if I could achieve the same experience with a laptop.
Advantages of the HP-OMEN gaming laptop
When I started the laptop for the first time, I was very impressed by the colored keyboard, which I was also able to configure myself. The HP Omen also started up very quickly, which I noticed as a positive thing compared to my somewhat outdated tower. The speed is very good for office applications, programming as well as streaming and surfing the Internet and even better than my PC. Unfortunately, rendering videos and games as well as image editing took too long.
Regarding the size of the gaming laptop, I was satisfied. 15 inches are big enough to watch movies and handy enough to take the OMEN with you in your backpack. The edges of the screen could have been a little smaller and the laptop could have been a little more compact.
Let's get to the essentials: the gaming experience
In the game, I was impressed by the clear sound and the low volume of the fan. The fan was audible, but not particularly annoying. There was no reason to complain about the technical equipment either. HDMI and USB ports are available and the laptop charges very quickly with the included cable. The battery lasts quite a long time (approx. 10 hours for text editing and programming without 3D (Unity or similar)). When streaming or gaming, the battery life is reduced to around 5 hours. The laptop got pretty hot when streaming videos or playing games, i.e. when the CPU was under load, which was uncomfortable sitting on your lap.
I found it somewhat disappointing that newer games could only be displayed smoothly at the lowest resolution. 4k games or films are not possible with the tested Omen 15. In addition, the gaming controller could not be recognized in some games. In my opinion, 1200 euros is a bit expensive for what is now a mid-range gaming laptop.
All in all, the OMEN 15 convinced me as a business and multimedia laptop. However, it can no longer compete as a gaming laptop for newer games.
