Studium nach der Ausbildung

Studying after training - opportunities and risks

Studying will pay off sooner or later. You not only acquire new knowledge, but also face new challenges. If you take this path even after training, you can make a huge leap in your career. In addition, as a graduate you have a better chance of higher salaries and the best career prospects. Thanks to your completed training, you have already been able to gain your first professional experience and are well prepared for the time after your studies. Read the following article to find out how worthwhile it is to study after your training.

What are the advantages of studying after training?

As part of an apprenticeship you can gain important life experiences. This puts you a lot ahead of your fellow students who start studying straight after leaving school. Not only have you already gained some initial experience in the professional world, but you have also already earned your own money. In principle, you can approach your studies more calmly if you are already standing on your own two feet. In addition, the problem of financing your studies is much easier to solve with a training qualification. For example, you can find a part-time job that pays you more money much faster than a traditional student job. If you study part-time, there is also the possibility that you will not have to give up your current job at all. As part of a part-time course of study, you can flexibly organize your study period according to your own requirements and needs.

Practical knowledge and more extensive skills

With training you will definitely be better prepared for the time after your studies, as you have already proven yourself in the professional world. For example, a multi-year apprenticeship gives you much more practical knowledge and extensive skills than a 3-month internship as part of your studies. Especially with courses such as computer science or business informatics that are aimed at specific careers, you have a clear advantage if you want to continue working in your current industry. If you want to start studying without a high school diploma, you clearly have better chances with a training qualification.

Since 2009, it has been much easier to get a place at university through training, even without a high school diploma. However, this varies from state to state and is sometimes linked to other conditions. Training before studying also makes sense if your Abitur average grade is not sufficient for your desired course of study in order to bridge the long waiting times . For example, at many German universities, studying medicine is only reserved for the best high school graduates. For this reason, many prospective students start training to become nurses.

Challenges and potential disadvantages

When studying after training, you should also be prepared for possible disadvantages. If you want to focus fully on your studies and finance your living with financial support, this will be difficult after initial training. For example, a BAföG entitlement is tied to certain requirements. As a rule, you can only receive this state funding if you are under the age of 30 and have been working for at least three years after your training. In addition, most scholarships are generally only available for initial training and there are age limits here too.
