A bookworm goes online
What do the love of reading and molecular biology have in common? At first - and admittedly also at second - glance, not much. But that doesn't matter to 25-year-old student Sarah, because those are exactly the two things she's most excited about. She is currently writing her master's thesis in biology at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf and has been running the literature blog Serpensz since 2008, which makes her ideal to be our current blogger of the month.
While at school, Sarah actually wanted to study photo design, but then spontaneously decided to study biology and has not regretted this decision to this day. During her studies, she focused on molecular and cell biology, i.e. the part of biology that deals with the various processes after fertilization, and is currently writing her master's thesis on this topic. For her, blogging is above all a creative balance to her theoretical studies, which is why she only reads and reviews the books that she likes. She is particularly fond of young adult books and light novels, which she devours one after the other, so that in peak times she puts a new recessional online almost every week.
For about a year now, she has not only been writing book reviews on her blog, but also uploading short videos she has made herself once or twice a week. In these she shows her funny side and deals with various prejudices, clichés and other things relating to the world of fiction in a humorous way. Her current mini-series with the meaningful title The Superbibliophile is particularly close to her heart, in which she both satirizes the well-known TV format with a black-haired teacher and demonstrates her acting talent. All of her videos are created 100% by herself: she plays, shoots and edits herself. You can now watch her in over 50 videos on her YouTube channel and Sarah has learned something new with every single clip, so that over time she always became more professional and experienced.
Sarah's blog posts often contain a variety of comments, which don't just come from her friends and family members. Over the years she has found many loyal readers and viewers, but Sarah no longer pays attention to the number of clicks on her blog and has deliberately turned this feature off. For a while she was really into them and checked the current count several times a day. At some point she would realize that that wasn't the purpose of why she started her blog. She wanted to exchange ideas about books with other bookworms, try them out, and above all, it should be fun and not a hunt for ever higher click numbers. For Sarah, blogging is above all a hobby that she doesn't want to miss, but for which she definitely wouldn't give up biology and science.
