As a student, you can use a simple trick to save a lot of money: bring your own food! Often tastes better and costs significantly less than the food offered in the beer garden itself.

Checklist

A small checklist of what should definitely not be missing from a Munich student's lunch basket:

  • tablecloth
  • Snack board
  • Dishes, napkins (for spills, which experience shows always happen!)
  • Good cheese (Emmental, Gouda…) and butter
  • Spices and mustard
  • Delicious bread (preferably brown bread!)
  • Side dishes (e.g. various salads)
  • And of course: Obatzda!

So, perfectly equipped, you can go to the beer garden! For those who can't understand the term “Obatzda”: Obatzda is nothing more than a delicious cheese cream. There are countless recipe variations for the delicacy - but here is a basic recipe that you can refine as you wish to ensure that the Obatzda can definitely be packed into your lunch bag!

Recipe Obatzda

You take:

250g Camembert (ripe!), a little melted butter, chopped onion, a pinch of salt, pepper, paprika and a little caraway - who wants a little wheat beer? If that's too strong for you, you can refine it with a little quark.

Preparation:

Crush the cheese and mix with butter and onion. Season with the spices indicated as desired, add beer and stir to form a cream. For optimal taste, let it steep a little and consume it the same day!

If you want, you can refine the whole thing with some quark.

Oh good!

The beer garden season usually puts a hole in your wallet.? With our tips you'll have at least as much fun and save a lot of money!
