Travel back in time to 1989

For all those who don't yet know what to do during the upcoming semester break, we suggest a journey back in time to 1989. From August 29th to September 14th you can travel with the “ Freedom Express ” through six European countries in the footsteps of the peaceful revolutions of 1989. Students, artists and creative people can apply for the tour until June 30th.

In 1989 the Iron Curtain fell and the Cold War ended. The Peaceful Revolutions of 1989, which originated in what was then the GDR, made a significant contribution to this. In the last 25 years, life in Germany and the countries of the former USSR has changed fundamentally. Freedom of expression, freedom of travel, freedom of the press, etc. have become a matter of course, especially in the digital age. This was anything but self-evident in Germany just a generation ago - and is still happening in many other countries around the world today.

With its actions, the “Freedom Express” wants to ensure that life in the former Eastern Bloc countries is not forgotten and that awareness is created that human rights are unfortunately often not an innate right, but a social privilege that needs to be protected. The 20 participants of the “Freedom Express” will highlight exactly these problems with actions, street art and a multimedia exhibition.

And since modern revolutions can often be found on the social web, and sometimes even have their origins there, there is now a separate Facebook page for the revolutions of 1989: “ Made in 89 ”. There, fictitious users report on their experiences in the revolutionary year of 1989, on intercepted telephone conversations, milk bars and state television channels.

To apply for the “Freedom Express”, simply develop a creative answer on the topic “The traces of '89 today – people, places and events” and submit it here together with a short letter of motivation and CV.

Further information about the tour and registration can be found on the English-language website of the “ Freedom Express ”.

The “Freedom Express” is an initiative of the European Network of Remembrance and Solidarity in collaboration with the Federal Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship, the National Cultural Center (Poland) and the Institute for Research on Transformation in Budapest as well as other partners.
