Study for four days, work in the company for one day

Press release from the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences

New study model in the Hagen Computer Science course combines academic and vocational education

Hagen. With the cooperative study program, students on the Computer Engineering course at the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences in Hagen can now combine their studies at the university with practical work in the company - and also earn money to finance their studies. The course is a full-time course with a standard period of study of seven semesters. During the lecture period, students study normally at the university four days a week. The fifth day is available for work in the company.

“The cooperative study program in computer engineering is a typical “win-win model” for everyone involved,” explains Prof. Dr. Norbert Drescher from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology. “The students gain practical professional experience during their studies and can apply the knowledge they have learned in the company. “The companies get to know potential employees and benefit from the transfer of knowledge with the university.”

An assessment that Sebastian Zimkowski also shares. He heads the Human Resources Services & Training department at Insta Elektro GmbH in Lüdenscheid: “The study model impressed us from the start and we would like to accept three students for the coming winter semester. From Insta’s point of view, this offers the optimal connection between practical, technical training and studies.” Insta develops and manufactures assemblies, devices and systems for building control technology as well as LED lights and the associated controls for modern architectural lighting. In the first two semesters, students will get to know the entire production chain from simple components to the finished product. From the third semester onwards, work in development is planned. “The Insta company strives for innovation leadership in its industry, and that is only possible with the right employees,” Zimkowski is convinced. He sees the new study model as an instrument for medium to long-term personnel planning: “As a company with a strong focus on development, we constantly need new, motivated and committed colleagues in the areas of computer engineering, electrical engineering and communications engineering. With the cooperative study program, we get to know potential new employees at an early stage and determine whether we are a good fit for each other.” Zimkowski promises the students intensive support within the company: “You will notice that we will provide you with good support.”

The cooperative study program in computer engineering is scheduled to start in the winter semester in September. The course deals with the use of computers in technical devices. This includes the development of specialized computers as well as integration into the system to be controlled as well as programming and communication between computers. Interested parties apply to a cooperating company and conclude a contract with them. At the same time, they enroll in the computer engineering course at the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences. The prerequisite for participation in the cooperative study program in computer engineering is a technical college entrance qualification or a high school diploma.
