More round than ever – 2014

One anniversary follows the next this year : 25 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall , 1200th birthday of Charlemagne , 100 years ago the First World War began - there is a lot to commemorate and celebrate this year. But some anniversaries are still largely unknown, for example these:

  • 60 years of “The Miracle of Bern” – in 1954 the German national soccer team surprisingly became world champions. She beat favorites Hungary 3-2 in the final in Bern.
  • And football again - 40 years of the World Cup title in Munich - in 1974 the boys around Beckenbauer, Müller and Breitner defeated the Netherlands 2-1.
  • 40 years of Playmobil – the legendary children's toy comes onto the market in 1974
  • 60th birthday of the parking meter – It hardly exists anymore, but it was legendary and, not least, the material for wonderful sketches, including those by Loriot .

  • 50 years of traffic jam reports on the radio - No joke, on April 1, 1964, Hessischer Rundfunk broadcast current traffic reports for the first time.
  • 25 years of Game Boy – On April 21, 1989, Nintendo brought the first Game Boy onto the market.
  • 25 years of the Love Parade – On July 1, 1989, around 150 techno freaks danced through West Berlin for the first time. By 2006, up to 1.5 million participants would be celebrating in the capital.
  • 25 years of the German double victory at Wimbledon – On July 9, 1989, Steffi Graf and Boris Becker won their finals on the famous English lawn.
  • 100 years of traffic lights – The first electric traffic lights went into operation in Cleveland, Ohio on August 5, 1914.
  • 40 years of Watergate – US President Richard Nixon resigns on August 9, 1974.
  • 100 years of the Panama Canal - The 82 kilometer long waterway between the Atlantic and Pacific was opened in 1914 and is crossed by around 14,000 ships every year.
