Tips for moving

Tips for moving

One of the most difficult things about moving is moving. Packing boxes, hauling boxes, unpacking boxes, navigating, coordinating and calculating everything. This can get on your last nerve, so preparation is key here.

1. Plan the move

First you have to think about what should go with it and what should go away. It's not always easy to part with some things, especially if there are a lot of memories attached to them, but ultimately not everything can always be taken with you with every move. So either store it or dispose of it at the local recycling center and thus reduce the transport burden on moving day.

TIP:

Please note that your refrigerator must be defrosted before moving. This takes about 24 hours to be completely free of ice.

It is also important to attach transport aids to the washing machine when transporting it, so that it will remain comfortable in the new apartment for a long time.

2. Moving team

Who should actually do the move? If you choose the cheaper alternative, get your friends together and rent a van and enjoy your moving day together. If this is not possible, you still have the moving company to take care of your move professionally.

If you want to move with your friends, it is advisable to ask in good time who has time for you and when, so that you don't end up alone. Everyone is busy these days, so it's important to knock on time.

When choosing a transporter or a moving company, you should always ask whether there are student rates. Price comparisons can save you high costs.

3. Pack

In order to prevent damage, it is important to pay attention to a few important things when packing.

TIP:

Pack moderately

In order not to confront your friends with immovable facts, boxes should not be too full - and especially book boxes should not be stuffed full of books. Anyone who has ever helped with a move is grateful for boxes that don't fall over when you lift them. So only pack half of the book boxes and add curtains, bedding, towels or clothes on top.

Tableware is always the most vulnerable item to transport and should be stowed accordingly. It can be transported particularly well between bed linen and clothes, or you can use kitchen roll to avoid direct contact between the dishes and the resulting damage. When it comes to dishes, it is also important not to pack the boxes too full. If the bottom of the box gives way to the internal pressure, the screaming can be loud.

4. Loading

You should proceed systematically when loading the van. So, first put all the large and bulky furnishings into the van and then fill the gaps with smaller items. Always make sure that all objects are secured and do not move and become independent when the transporter is being driven.

So that you don't drag yourself to death with your friends when moving, it is recommended to form a chain from the apartment to the van. This means that everyone only has to look after a small section and everyone doesn't always have to cover the entire route between the front door and the car

5. Food

Anyone who works a lot is also hungry and thirsty. That's why it's important to have something edible and drinkable within reach. After completing the work, there should be a cool beer ready for everyone after work.

Re-register

It is essential to re-register when you change residence. You should re-register your home address with the Citizens' Registration Office as well as the address for your account, your magazine subscriptions, your electricity provider, BaföG office and any other contractual partners.

TIP:

If you haven't managed to inform all of your contractual partners and friends about your move in time, you can submit a forwarding order to Deutsche Post. All letters that are still addressed to your old address will then be delivered to your new address.
