Many people can study in Mannheim, but what these three students have achieved in their city raises the bar a whole lot higher: Ricarda, Julian and Ali are the founders of the cultural initiative “Zwischenraum”, a great campaign the empty buildings are transformed into event venues . A new meeting place for culture-interested students in Mannheim and locals is being created in abandoned areas.
Started as a bachelor's project, now a huge success
For her final project, Ricarda started the original “Zwischenraum” , which immediately became a great success. Little by little they were joined by their colleagues Julian and Ali, all three of whom studied communication design in Mannheim .
The three look for unused properties , primarily in Neckarstadt-West, an area that is actually known for its relatively high crime rate. They then organize cultural events such as concerts, readings, exhibitions, bars or performances and thus attract students in Mannheim as well as locals who take part in these cultural events together.
The whole thing is financed by the three former Mannheim students themselves, but they also receive funding from the city. They also earn the money they need to implement their projects by selling food and drinks.
Study in Mannheim, enjoy culture at the KIOSK
Particularly worth mentioning is theKIOSK project that Ricarda, Julian and Ali started last year: They discovered an abandoned kiosk on Mannheim's Neumarkt and turned it into the number 1 hip event location . A wide variety of people met there: students, academics, long-time residents, foreigners - all connected by culture. Since the KIOSK was a huge success, it is being held again this year, with support from the Cultural Office. You can still take part in cultural life there until November.
With their commitment, the three initiators have not only done something for cultural life in their city, but at the same time have improved a rather undesirable district. For this they rightly received an honor from the mayor of the city of Mannheim . They will continue to plan great projects - an incentive for all students in Mannheim to follow in their footsteps.
