Press release from the Mainz University of Applied Sciences
Exhibition
NEBENAN shows studies by architecture students in the 2nd semester of the Mainz University of Applied Sciences under the direction of Prof. Kerstin Molter on the typology of the semi-detached house.
Ever since the Enlightenment, that is, since the discovery of the individual and the right to self-determination, our society has been exposed to a tendency towards “atomization”.
This has been accompanied by a shrinking of the areas of the collective up to the present day. The smallest architectural units in society are our apartments and houses.
The classic semi-detached house with its clearly assigned house units is contrasted with concepts in which the individual units cannot be read. Nevertheless, the needs of appropriation, demarcation and adaptation find their expression. The boundaries with the neighbors - seemingly disappeared - have been carefully considered and worked out.
20 project analyzes provide differentiated knowledge about how people live side by side, make existing relationships between private and collective areas visible, understandable and subsequently “designable”.
NEBENAN also shows documentation of the “commonplaceness” of architecture in the context of neighborhood living, which is a clear expression of the needs for privacy, self-realization and appreciation.
Speech
At the opening, Wolfgang Novak (Anah - Salzburg AT) presents his project “friendly parasite”, a two-story extension to an existing apartment building. At first glance, programmatically undefined, the project seeks to influence the lives of its users and change the place itself.
