Low Budget Reisen

Low budget travel: How to save money on food

Your suitcases are packed, the low budget trip is about to begin, only one thing is still worrying you: How on earth are you supposed to not squander your entire, hard-earned (low) budget after just three days with the countless delicious food options? We have 10 tips for you on how to survive your vacation deliciously and cheaply !

Plan ahead

Once hunger makes itself felt, it is often said: Whatever the cost - be careful! Overcome this “hunger trap” by getting an overview of cheap restaurants and eating options in your budget travel city as early as possible.

Take snacks with you

Low budget traveling means a lot of walking, often you are on the road for hours. No wonder you get hungry! But before you pay a hefty 5 euros for a limp sausage at the nearest hot dog stand, you'd better have the foresight to make yourself a snack on the go.

Have breakfast at the hotel

Even on cheap trips, breakfast is often included in some hotels or hostels . Use it! This way you can save a lot of money by having to pay for one less meal for the entire duration of your trip.

Pay attention to deals

Take a look online to see if you can take advantage of discounted coupons on your low budget trip. You can often find great deals there that can make your meal really cheap.

Book low budget trips with kitchen

This is incredibly helpful for saving a lot of money! If you have the opportunity to cook for yourself, you can decide when and how much money you want to spend. For example, you can rent private accommodation with your own kitchen from 9flats or WIMDU .

Pack your camping stove

Small, handy and ready to use anywhere - the camping stove . This way you can conjure up a warm dish even in wild nature . Assuming you have also packed some groceries. wink

Participate in WWOOF

World-Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF) is a network that brings together people with a nature-loving lifestyle. Through the WWOOF you can volunteer to help on organic farms, for example, and can also eat what you have harvested yourself.

Eat slowly

Stupid tip? Absolutely not! Often your eyes are bigger than your hunger and you devour everything without thinking. But the hunger comes back very quickly. It's better to enjoy it more slowly: This way you will feel full for longer. And the low budget trip remains low budget!

Ask about student discounts

What often applies in Germany can also apply to your low budget trip: ask politely about student menus. Maybe there’s a “drink-for-free” option or something similar? You get a guaranteed student discount abroad with the ISIC Card .

Save on alcohol

Sure, a delicious cocktail shouldn't be missed on vacation. But enjoy alcoholic drinks in moderation: They are often expensive and a real money guzzler , and can quickly turn your low budget trip into a no (more) budget trip.

Eat local specialties

Skip the burgers and fries – stick to restaurants that are mostly visited by locals and offer regional specialties. It's usually cheap there, lively and you can eat a few local delicacies in a great atmosphere, which (for that very reason) are cheaper than the "tourist stuff".

Find hidden restaurants

A spot in Times Square – best view! But here, of course, you also pay prices that are worthless. And the food doesn't necessarily have to be delicious here! Instead, find a nice, small restaurant in a side street .

... and you'll be full too!
