“Students hardly have anything to do anymore and spend their free time mainly partying and drinking” – a carelessly expressed prejudice that still persists about students today. How little this has to do with the truth has been increasingly shown in studies in recent years.
At full speed into the abyss
Those who have made particularly big plans are hit particularly hard. Always do more and more than everyone else: be better. Meet expectations. Stand out from the crowd. For some this works great - others break under the pressure and suffer what is known as burnout syndrome. The desire for perfection probably exists in everyone. For some more, for others less. Finding a healthy balance is more difficult than you think.
Can this affect me too?
In general, it can be said that burnout syndrome can actually affect anyone sooner or later. The word “burnout” is not always the right choice. Whether it is actually
- Burnout,
- exhaustion syndrome,
- adjustment disorder,
- depression
- or similar
Ultimately, only an expert can judge. And help! You can find out more about this topic here .
What is alarming, however, is that there are more and more younger patients in this area.
A Forsa study shows that around 25% of all students suffer from constant stress. In addition, more than one in five students are said to suffer from psychological problems.
For the study, Forsa surveyed 1,000 students about their state of health in March 2015. Medication prescriptions from 2014 and outpatient diagnostic data from 190,000 students insured directly with the Techniker Krankenkasse from 2013 were also evaluated.
How can I prevent burnout?
There is hardly a blanket solution that is right for everyone. The problems that arise arise from personal difficulties, everyone develops anxiety or depression in different areas. What can help is to consciously keep the situation in mind: What am I afraid of? Can I counteract this - what can I do to reduce this fear?
If nothing seems to be helping, a specialist can help. Don't be shy: you're not the only one.
Otherwise applies:
- Drink plenty of water
- Take sufficient breaks to study
- do sports regularly
- Don't miss out on having fun and reward yourself sometimes
This can help immensely in preventing burnout syndrome or other psychological problems. Very important and also a good way to relieve stress: turn off your smartphone as often as possible - and especially before going to bed.
