I'm currently in the middle of my master's degree - and I'm extremely happy with my decision to continue my bachelor's degree for another two years. There are a few master's benefits, so I'm going to talk a little about it and tell you why the master's degree is worth it for me.
Master’s degree – you have these advantages
While some people can't wait to finally get a firm footing in a company or a large company after completing their bachelor's degree and settle into the world of work, others cry when they think about the regular everyday life that a permanent job entails brings. I have five good reasons to get your master's degree.
1. Free access to knowledge
Many universities offer the opportunity to continue your education outside of your studies, for example in the form of free or reduced-price language courses. A look at the adult education center's brochure makes you swallow. Exorbitant prices and the required discipline are often knockout reasons for learning French, Spanish or another language.
If you are currently studying, there is a very good chance that you will also take one or two language courses or other further training courses with you. The necessary discipline is also present - after all, certain deadlines have to be met for homework and exams.
2. Better career opportunities
It is often not explicitly stated, but the fact is: a master's degree is required for many professional fields, as this is almost considered a prerequisite for maintaining the highly competitive job. In some areas such as chemistry, biology or physics, a doctorate is also considered good form. In order to be able to do this, the master's degree must inevitably be pushed forward.
The career advancement opportunities also look completely different with a master’s degree. Where a bachelor's degree is already over, master's graduates often have the chance to climb one step or another on the career ladder. The following also applies: the better your master's grade, the more professional doors are open to you. The master's thesis is crucial - far more than in the bachelor's degree. That's why you should work on your master's thesis with enthusiasm in order to get a good grade. And don't forget: Have it corrected to avoid annoying errors! 3. Overcome indecision
The question “So what are you going to do after you graduate?” makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I have no idea, mom! Thank God I still have two years to solidify my career aspirations, complete internships and decide on a direction that will make me happy professionally.
I haven't found it yet, but the master's degree offers completely new opportunities for specialization - and hopefully with these comes that "Wow, I want to do that later" moment that not only mom is eagerly waiting for.
4. Easy access to internships
The requirements for an internship often contain a clause stating that you should be enrolled at a university within the time frame for the internship. So if you want to do internships to find out what's really fun, a master's degree definitely offers advantages. During my bachelor's degree I had the opportunity to immerse myself in several professional fields - and now, during my master's degree, I can explore the broad field of the working world in a little more detail.
5. Research your own projects and questions
What, the bachelor's degree is already over? It's only just begun! In any case, after completing my bachelor's degree, it didn't feel like I was now an absolute expert in my field. There were a lot of basic principles that I could now apply theoretically - but to what? In the master's program, the knowledge from the bachelor's degree is finally intensified and applied to your own projects and questions.
Which master's degree you want to pursue is entirely up to you and your ideas. However, don't refuse from the outset to add a degree to your bachelor's degree - it can really be worth it and after all it's only a maximum of two years.
