What are you doing after school? Have you already decided on a field of study? What job can you do after completing your studies? Many of you often encounter these and other questions at the beginning of your career planning when it comes to shaping your own future. It's not easy to make a decision straight away given the many options available. When choosing future employers, it has become clear in recent years that the positive contribution to sustainability and the environment that the company makes is increasingly playing a role in the tough fight for talent. Generation Z especially appreciates commitment to the environment and society.
Jobs with added value are in demand
Fridays for Future, petitions that go viral, the increasing willingness to restrict habits for the sake of climate protection - concern for the environment has a profound influence on Generation Z, including in their career plans. Logically, after all, you will feel the consequences of climate change much more strongly for a long time to come. The European Railway Industry Association, UNIFE, wanted to know more. As part of the HOP ON FOR OUR PLANET campaign, UNIFE, together with the international think tank ThinkYoung, surveyed Generation Z in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Poland and the Netherlands. And in fact, more than one in four people would dedicate their career to social causes such as environmental protection. Almost half are interested in working or studying in a field related to sustainability and the environment in the future.
The railway, a relic of the past? Are you kidding me? Are you serious when you say that!
As your commitment and interest in environmental protection grows, you may also want to turn your attention to industries that have previously remained largely ignored. Because future-oriented employers are often not immediately recognizable, such as the railway supply industry. What does the rail network, trains and the railway supply industry have to do with a greener future? The railway is one of the most environmentally friendly transport options today - be it for people or freight. Thanks to innovative solutions from the European supplier industry, it is becoming even more sustainable. Employees in the railway supply industry contribute to a greener future every day, in line with the European Green Deal for a sustainable EU economy.
“Rail is the future, both for sustainable transport infrastructure and for innovative jobs and lifelong opportunities,” explains Henri Poupart-Lafarge , Chairman and CEO of Alstom and Chairman of the European Railway Industry Association, UNIFE.
