The compatibility of job and Quidditch

Successfully completing your studies and then looking for a job can sometimes present you with completely new problems. A friend recently told me that she was currently busy cleaning up her online profiles to make them suitable for applications. Human resources departments are increasingly taking a quick look at Facebook and Google to find out what activities their applicants have left out of their CVs.

She removed all photos that showed a successful student life but should not be seen by a potential employer due to their frequent proximity to high beer consumption, and made her online identity almost flawless. Almost because she was nevertheless asked at the next job interview why she often discussed Quidditch, the magical popular sport from the Harry Potter books, online, as she loved to do in the comments of my blog.

If this HR practice actually exists, I'll probably be prepared for a long period of unemployment and a lot of unpleasant questions. Not only do I summarize each of my weeks in words and pictures in my blog, I discuss my love of New Year's Stallone films too often on Twitter and my Facebook pictures are too blatant even for the BILD newspaper; No, I didn't stay quiet when it came to Quidditch either.

Maybe my fellow student simply approached the problem incorrectly. Maybe it's not about presenting yourself as accurately as possible everywhere and slipping into a pants suit for your Facebook profile picture. Because perhaps the question is more: Do I ever want to work for an employer who doesn't recognize the high quality of a Silvester Stallone film?

In the end, said friend still found a job. She now works for a company that is very liberal about a purely private passion for wizarding sports. I have since deleted the Quidditch comments anyway. Not because I thought it was necessary, but purely because I'm a good friend.
