Studying business administration: in the fast lane!

Studying business administration: everything about studying

Business administration is one of, if not THE, classics among all degree programs: The numerous specialization options and different disciplines offer you a very high degree of flexibility and leave little to be desired. Since I couldn't say with absolute certainty right after graduating from high school what I "want to do when I grow up" (according to the cliché questions from all my relatives), I decided to please everyone for once - and decided to study business administration. Business administration is never a bad thing, everyone knew that and were happy with my choice of subject. And I also went into my studies with the good feeling that I would later be able to choose from a wide variety of careers and take advantage of the opportunity to specialize.

I can already say this much: I have never regretted studying and I am currently in the final stages of my master's degree. The application marathon is slowly beginning: Many job offers appeal to me, but entering the “working world” scares me a bit. Fortunately, there is a practical remedy here too. My tip is the career guide from Bigkarriere , which gives me lots of tips for starting a career and also has some advice on how to go about the job interview. Because unlike a position as a working student, here it's all about the nitty-gritty, because I will probably be paid well and have to deliver accordingly. I'll keep you up to date - but now back to the business studies in general:

My degree in business administration

As a student it's so easy - at least that's the common misconception. Well, not entirely, but in general terms, to speak of “student life as a student” would be a lie. As in every area of life, there are positive and negative aspects to studying.

The positive sides of studying business administration

The basic course is essentially divided into two parts - first the basics, which lay general foundations, then in the higher semesters with specialization modules in order to decide on a specific direction. That is the first fundamental advantage of studying business administration that I would like to emphasize. Regardless of whether it's mechanical engineering, computer science, chemistry, "something digital" or something else - somewhere, everyone will find a field that they particularly like and that they would like to pay more attention to in their future studies up to a master's degree. For me, this was the area of computer science that I could devote myself to from the third semester onwards. This then turns out to be a kind of "minor subject" - for the basic business studies there were 120 points, and 60 ECTS had to be earned in the area of computer science or another elective area. I've always found programming fascinating and thought I'd give it a try. Since I really enjoyed the whole thing and still do, I know that I made the right decision. The only drawback: Once the socialization area has been selected, you have to go through it and unfortunately you can't change anything.

Another positive aspect of studying business administration is of course the job prospects, which are still very diverse. Business administration is in demand and someone who knows the subject is essential in every industry, which is why studying business administration makes perfect sense. The salary is initially secondary and of course depends heavily on your future employer - but here too you shouldn't have to worry about it if you have a business degree. Motivated graduates will definitely not have to go hungry. So we have on the plus side:

  • Diverse specialization options
  • good job prospects
  • every industry has to do with business administration
  • relatively high salary

My favorite subject actually ended up being computer science - I just really enjoyed programming!

The negative sides of studying business administration

Of course, it's not all sunshine and roses when studying business administration - since logical thinking has always been one of my weaknesses, I had some difficulties getting used to the topics, especially at the beginning of my studies. Accounting , cost accounting and much more are very number-intensive and in my case took up a lot of time. But with the right specialist literature, things always worked out quite well for me - and at some point I even really enjoyed juggling numbers. Unfortunately, I can also agree with the cliché that studying business administration is boring as hell - at least partially. However, no matter what course you choose, there will be subjects that will captivate you more than others. You'll have to learn to deal with this - and still sit in the annoying statistics seminar. At least for me personally, it was a great help to sit down for lectures and seminars so that I had at least "heard" the material before. Unfortunately, I can't deny that it was pretty annoying at times. We therefore record the following points on the cons side:

  • Time and learning intensive
  • Often very complex
  • sometimes boring

The positive points far outweigh the negative points listed here - studying business administration is great, everyone will find their niche and you will also find an area that you can be enthusiastic about.

A general "negative" point that covers all departments is the cost: Depending on the city, even as a student you pay large amounts for learning materials, semester tickets and other things. A scholarship is a good way to cover costs and at the same time continue your education beyond the knowledge taught at university. While most providers offer scholarships for all subject areas, there are also those that specialize in business administration . Get to know new people, take part in seminars and workshops and receive a small financial injection at the same time - definitely apply!

Short Fatiz: Studying business administration

As a brief conclusion, the following can be said: I really enjoyed my studies and I don't regret my decision for a second. Whether studying business administration is right for you depends of course on individual factors and can only be decided by you. It's best to take your time to read through the relevant study program at your chosen university and decide whether your ideas and interests match the respective study plan. The wide range of specialization options were the decisive factor for me in deciding to study business administration, which later turned out to be the right thing to do. If this also applies to you - try it out! If you don't like it, there are numerous other options for organizing your studies.

Good luck choosing your course of study!
