Martha Wermann: von der Tanz- zur IT-Karriere

Martha Wermann: from dance to IT career

The master's student is looking forward to professional security and many perspectives - at work and in her free time

Since October 2019, Martha Wermann has been supporting various IT projects at the BWI as a dual master's student and is studying business informatics at the same time. The two-time Discofox world champion does both well from home – and still finds time to dance. In this portrait she explains how she manages to do all of this.

Martha Wermann met her employer at the two-day “IT Recruiting Day” in May last year. She was immediately impressed by the master's program and the career opportunities offered by the IT service provider. Since October, she has mainly supported the “Digital Enabling Service” area with consulting tasks and transformation projects for the Bundeswehr. She is also involved in special projects in the BWI's Shared Service Delivery area.

Collaborate digitally in the home office

Martha Wermann usually travels across Germany two to three times a week to attend customer appointments on site. Martha prepares the appointments independently or supports the creation of concepts and presentations, for example for international programs such as the “TEN” program or national project parts or strategy topics.

However, due to the current Corona situation, she is currently completing her tasks entirely from her home office. This works well because BWI provides the necessary infrastructure for this and she is used to working from home. In addition to the place of work, the projects have also changed, so she is currently working in the Shared Service Delivery area, where she is currently supporting the Corona crisis team, which coordinates all of the company's Corona measures.

Theory and practice are optimally interlinked

In addition to her work at BWI, Martha is completing a master's degree in business informatics at the SCMT Steinbeis School of Management and Technology in Berlin and Stuttgart. Normally, two-week face-to-face events on the topics of innovation management, statistics or cybersecurity take place at the university every one and a half to two months. Due to the corona pandemic, everything was switched to digital lectures and documents.

Martha was impressed by the BWI's dual master's program because of its practical relevance and structure. Her supervisors at the company and university side make sure that she can apply the newly acquired knowledge at the university directly in practice.

Martha Wermann: von der Tanz- zur IT-Karriere

Diversely talented: From the dance floor to IT

However, Martha's career path could have looked different, as nothing actually stood in the way of a professional dance career. After graduating from high school, she and her dance partner won the Discofox world championship title twice in a row. During her bachelor's degree in business administration at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf, Martha completed various internships in the IT environment.

It became clear to her that, in addition to business management topics, she would like to focus on information technology in the future. The dual master's program in business informatics at BWI offers her this opportunity. The good thing about it: Her studies and work still give her enough freedom to dance today: “I’m a part-time dance teacher. “It’s incredibly fun for me and it’s my personal balance,” says Martha.

Full development: professionally and privately

Martha particularly appreciates that the BWI supports her professionally and personally and offers her many perspectives. She can already implement sub-projects independently and is involved in different areas of the company: “Every customer, every order and every IT requirement is different. This makes my everyday work very varied and I am constantly developing further,” says the dual master’s student.

Would you also like to do a dual course of study with an IT employer that gives you the opportunity to develop professionally and privately?

Then apply now to BWI, the IT service provider for the Bundeswehr and the federal government. We are still looking for students for the master's degree programs M.Sc. IT Management, M.Sc. Big Data & Business Analytics and M.Sc. Business Informatics. More information can be found here: www.bwi-karriere.de
