Starting a career in e-commerce: This is how it works

E-commerce or online trading is a relatively new area that is currently enjoying increasing popularity. Already established companies such as Amazon, Ebay, Zalando and Co. offer attractive salaries and exciting fields of work. The career choice promises to be appealing not only in terms of the salary: you certainly imagine dealings in e-commerce companies to be relatively relaxed. Founder atmosphere, relaxed interaction with each other, fairly flat hierarchies, friendly relationships with employees and bosses, a lot of teamwork. Attractive, exciting, new! Anyone who decides to start a career in e-commerce should keep a few things in mind, because: There is a lot of interest in careers in the fields mentioned, and the jobs - at least when starting in the company of your choice - are usually very limited.

Interest! This is an important factor that should not be underestimated. You will hardly have a chance of asserting yourself in the highly competitive market if you don't have a passion for the relevant area. The competition is fierce, the days can be long, technical know-how is mandatory and very, very important. Studying in a related field, such as business administration with a relevant focus, economics or a similar field is therefore a must.

Of course, at the beginning of your studies you are not really sure what you want to do later. If you are aiming for a career in e-commerce, you should give yourself less rather than more time to set a thematic focus in the relevant area. Broad technical knowledge in the areas of online trading, cost accounting, marketing and more does not just accumulate overnight, but rather takes time. Start specializing as early as possible and put the knowledge you have gained into practice. This works particularly well as part of an internship - perhaps even in the company of your choice later on? - or a working student position. Here you can apply your skills practically and get early feedback from which you can learn and improve. Not quite your area? You'll only find out by trying it! Of course, it is always particularly well received by employers if you have already founded a business in this area yourself. This shows that you have a great passion for the field, as starting a business always involves certain risks. Of course, having your own start-up is not a prerequisite!

Put your career dream into practice

Have you completed internships, completed your studies with good degrees and are there still huge interest in the area of ​​e-commerce? Then let’s get started applying for your dream job.
