It's part of studying like sunburn is part of summer vacation. Meanwhile it hurts and when it's over you swear to yourself that you'll be better prepared next time: write term papers. In many degree programs and in almost all of them, they are required at least as a final thesis. It is all the more worrying that, according to a study by the Mentorium editing service, only 12% of students see themselves as being able to write a term paper independently.
The aim of a university degree should, among other things, be to learn to deal with scientific questions independently. This is usually practiced by writing a term paper after a university event. As a result, over 60 percent of students have to write one to two term papers per semester, and over a fifth even have to write three to four.
According to the Mentorium editing service, the most common problems that students face when writing a term paper are “formulating their own thoughts”, “writing at a scientific level”, “structured work” and “finding a topic”. Editing and proofreading also pose problems for a third of students when writing a term paper. Nevertheless, around 30% of the students surveyed do not let anyone proofread or edit their homework. Regular proofreading also helps professional writers to structure their texts and bring them into shape. “After all, a well-structured and easy-to-read term paper is the best recommendation for an aspiring scientist. Doctoral students and professors use the academic proofreading service as a matter of course. Every successful author has an editor. But the benefits of good proofreading have not yet reached Bachelor’s and Master’s students,” says Mentorium Managing Director Georgia Trimceski.
Just like against sunburn, the right preparation and the right tools also help when writing a term paper. And that's exactly what proofreading should be seen as, as help to make the next term paper less stressful.
