Interested in starting a business? But who can support me in implementing my idea? What information is available and which network meetings can I attend?
The start-up landscape in Mainz is very diverse. Interested founders have a difficult time choosing the right advice and support organizations. At first they often don't know which organizations they can trust and which organization is responsible for which type of foundation or issue. On the other hand, organizations sometimes face the challenge of recommending their founders to the right contacts.
The Mainz University of Applied Sciences has therefore taken on this topic and started the Founders-in-Mainz project with financial support from the Ministry of the Interior, Sports and Infrastructure of Rhineland-Palatinate. “With the help of the project, founders can systematically research the wealth of information available in Mainz,” says Dr. Stefan Weiler from the Ministry of the Interior.
The President of the Mainz University of Applied Sciences, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Gerhard Muth explains: “We have been on the path to becoming a start-up university in Mainz for more than 13 years. We were the first university in Rhineland-Palatinate to set up a founding chair with the support of the city, the IHK and HWK chambers and the ISB. With funding from the state, we have now been able to establish the first cross-disciplinary professorship in the area of entrepreneurial thinking and action across the country in three years. For a year now, together with the university and the university medicine center in Mainz, we have been running the cross-university start-up office, which is located at our university of applied sciences.”
The day-to-day consulting work of the start-up office also gave rise to the impulse to put together all the information on regional and national institutions that support start-ups, including the location, contact person, contact details and a brief presentation of the individual goals and offers. “When I wanted to orient myself in the Mainz start-up landscape, I asked myself which contacts would be the right ones for me as a founder,” says Pascal Klein, young founder from Mainz and co-initiator of the project.
“With the new homepage www.gruenden-in-mainz.de, we have created the opportunity for founders to receive an up-to-date overview of start-up activities in Mainz at any time, as we update the homepage regularly,” says Dr. Sabine Hartel-Schenk, project manager of the start-up office in Mainz. “We are also grateful for suggestions for including additional content, especially from founders themselves.” In addition to the wealth of information about the organizations, Gründer-in-Mainz also provides an overview of financing options, events, rooms, competitions and network meetings where Those interested in starting a business and founders among themselves
exchange – and special offers for women. “It is extremely important that prospective founders receive feedback on their project from various sources,” says Prof. Dr. Elmar D. Konrad, head of the iuh – Institute for Entrepreneurship at the University of Applied Sciences, the project. “We teach our students how to create a business plan, but those interested in starting a business must learn very early on how important networks are in successfully turning their idea into a company.”
According to the mayor of Mainz, it is important to spread the very lively start-up scene in Mainz as broadly as possible. “Every year technical and creative innovations are developed that have the potential for academic start-ups. What location is better suited for the “knowledge” resource than the state capital of Rhineland-Palatinate?” adds Mayor Michael Ebling.
The head of the Mainz economic department, Christopher Sitte, emphasizes: “Mainz founders should have the feeling that they are in good hands and that they have an infrastructure in Mainz that promotes and supports entrepreneurship.” Such an infrastructure includes strong networks (start-up and expert networks) and a transparent and active funding landscape. “That is why we have had a founder guide in Mainz since July 2013, who, in addition to this very helpful information on the Gründer-in-Mainz.de homepage, is also supposed to bring all organizations together and is available as a contact person for the city,” Sitte continued. Founders-in-Mainz makes a significant contribution to the implementation of this vision of the future.
