Henry Ford once said “Success consists in always having the skills that are needed at the moment”. So if you want to pursue a career, you should lay the right foundations right from the start. But how do you plan your own career correctly?
Before the job is after the job
According to coach and trainer Henryk Lüderitz, many career starters and young talents start thinking about careers far too late. Most college graduates only start thinking seriously about their careers after they've accepted their first job, and then quickly find that others who have planned better are overtaking them.
A tip for university graduates is to create your own strengths profile in order to check which careers and positions suit you and where your talents lie . It's not just about topics in which you can get good grades, but also about those that you enjoy and that you can get excited about!
But you should also ask yourself what non-disciplinary strengths and interests you have and what special experiences you have gained. For example, do you like organizing? Are there any university trips, concerts or other projects that you would like to set up privately? All of these are experiences that can play an important role in choosing a career and applying.
What you should consider if you have the job
In addition, there are of course some pitfalls and faux pas that you can quickly stumble over as a beginner. This starts with the job interview and continues in dealing with the new team and the new boss. “A lot of things can go wrong in the first few days,” says Lüderitz.
It is especially important to leave a positive impression in the first few days. But it's more about the correct handling and appearance. Nobody expects professional mastery in the first few days, but a good personal introduction helps to lay important foundations for later . The correct dress code is important right from the start. In the first two days the rule is to be overdressed rather than underdressed, but after that you should try to adapt as early as possible.
A good tip is to take a closer look at the company's organizational chart and remember who is responsible for which areas of responsibility. You are welcome to ask your colleagues in a relaxed, friendly conversation to get an overall picture of the department. What is important, however, is that the questions should be appreciative and open. If you're a know-it-all, you definitely won't make any new friends.
