Especially around Christmas time, many people feel the desire to volunteer. Everyone can make a contribution to making things better for refugees, homeless people and socially disadvantaged people: with the knowledge from their studies, a little time, an empty shared room, with openness and humanity and creative ideas. We are therefore presenting five exemplary initiatives in which students can volunteer.
Volunteer: Refugee Aid
1. Schnell-help.de
Volunteers, refugees and other actors can network and coordinate with each other on the online platform and with the app: Where are which donations in kind needed? Where are you looking for a German teacher? What leisure activities are there for refugees? Schnell-helfer.de currently exists for six cities, but the platform is growing. If you would like to help quickly, please go this way.
2. Start with a friend
Anyone who has ever moved to a new city knows how hard it is to get along without friends. This is even more difficult for refugees. This is exactly where the Start with a friend initiative comes in: it provides friends who can help each other on an equal footing. If you don't just want to volunteer, but also want to become a friend, click here.
3. Reading start for refugee children
In 2015, the Reading Foundation launched the three-year Reading Start project for refugee children. In addition to volunteer reading mentors, children up to the age of five in initial reception centers will receive a small reading starter set to introduce them to the German language. If you would like to volunteer as a reading sponsor or finance a reading start set, please click here.

4. Hope worldwide
The umbrella organization helps those in need in around 100 countries, the non-profit organization in Germany Hope worldwide Deutschland eV takes care of the homeless, seniors and refugees in various projects. Anyone who wants to give some hope, free from business, political or religious interests, will find it here.
5. Tafel eV
There is an abundance of food in Germany, but unfortunately not everyone gets enough of it. The Federal Association of German Food Banks ensures that this unfair distribution is at least somewhat balanced. You can support them here with donations in kind as well as with donations of time.
