“Mom, Dad, I'll be away!” That's what it sounds like to most of you when you tell your parents that you're going abroad soon for a semester or internship - that's what the results of our survey with Uniplaces show , which we called for in January. 85 percent of participants stated that they did not let their parents influence their decision for or against studying abroad. This proves: No matter what mom and dad think – you do your thing!
Out of sight out of mind? Never!
Nevertheless , regular contact with your parents is important to you even when you are abroad . Almost three quarters of those surveyed (71 percent) who had already completed their trip abroad said that they had checked in with their parents at least once a week while abroad.
18 percent each said they had spoken to mom and dad two to three times a week or daily . Whether by phone, Skype, email or WhatsApp, the survey results clearly show that exchanges with parents are extremely important for you as students during your stay abroad and that you keep them regularly updated about your experiences abroad.
No money, no problems!
By the way: Those students who let their parents influence their decision to go abroad usually do so for financial reasons:
56 percent of those surveyed said that mom and dad influenced their decision through a financial injection .
