The story
London 1887: At the lavish celebrations on the occasion of her 50th anniversary to the throne, the sometimes stubborn British monarch Queen Victoria (Judi Dench) meets the young Indian servant Abdul Karim (Ali Fazal). To the surprise of her family and advisors, she accepts Abdul into her entourage - initially as a servant at the royal court. The otherwise distant Queen soon finds herself refreshed by her new servant, who turns out to be an inspiring conversation partner and introduces her to his foreign culture. Abdul shows her that even as a long-time ruler, she can still learn a lot about the people in the British Empire. A highly unusual friendship develops between the two, which quickly creates mistrust and envy among the entourage at court.
Ten years ago, the Oscar®-nominated director and royal expert Stephen Frears successfully dealt with the English royal family and Victoria's great-great-granddaughter Elizabeth II in The Queen. Now, with subtle humor, he devotes himself to something that has never been told before in Victoria & Abdul , true episode from the life of Queen Victoria - a story of friendship, tolerance and what it means to serve and rule.
