The story
England is at war with France in the early 18th century, but duck racing and eating pineapples are growing in popularity. The frail Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) sits on the throne, but her close friend Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) rules the country in her place and also takes care of Anne's health and her erratic moods. When the new maid Abigail (Emma Stone) takes her job, she quickly ingratiates herself with Sarah. Sarah takes Abigail under her wing and Abigail sees her chance to return to her aristocratic roots. As the political disputes take up more and more of Sarah's time, Abigail takes her place and from then on acts as the queen's confidant. The budding friendship now gives Abigail the opportunity to achieve her ambitious goals, and she won't let any woman, man, politics or anything else stand in her way.
