Student cities worldwide: PARIS, je t'aime!

Savoir vivre plus excellent education (17 universities!) and high internationality: According to the “QS Best Student Cities” ranking, Paris is at the top when it comes to students. Here are a few tips for your semester abroad in the French capital.

Flora Anavi (27) is a true Parisian. She studied European project management and spent a semester abroad at the HU Berlin. Today Flora works as a project coordinator at the film theater network “Europa Cinemas” and is responsible for the website and Facebook page, among other things.

COST

You should expect around 1,000 euros per month. The rent alone costs between 500 and 700 euros (not uncommon: twelve square meters with a shower in the hallway...). Plus electricity, a monthly ticket for the metro (“Carte ImagineR” for 27 euros), money for cinemas etc. as well as food, which is usually a little more expensive than in Germany.

ACCOMMODATION

The Paris housing market is tough. If you apply early enough, you can hope for a place in a dormitory; Anyone who has contacts should take over the room of an Erasmus predecessor. Otherwise: start your search a month in advance on the Internet or on site. Because the rooms are usually allocated extremely quickly.

WHERE IS THE BEST TO LIVE?

The currently cheapest districts are in the north and east of Paris (arrondissements 11, 17, 18, 19, 20). Particularly beautiful districts are 11e, 19e and 20e. Many young people live here, there are many pubs, restaurants and parks.

CANTEEN

A lunch in the cafeteria costs an average of 3.15 euros.

An overview of the cafeteria can be found at www.crous-paris.fr/article.asp?idcat=AAAA

GERMAN STUDENTS IN PARIS

Helpful starting points are the German-French Youth Office ( www.dfjw.org ) and the

German House for Students “Maison Heinrich Heine” ( www.maison-heinrich-heine.fr ). If you want to get to know other Germans over Augustiner Hell or schnitzel and potato salad, you should go to the German Café Titon ( www.cafetiton.com ).

BEST LIBRARIES FOR LEARNING

For lovers of historical halls: Bibliothèque Nationale de France , Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève

If you like something modern: Bibliothèque Sainte-Barbe

NEXT TO EIFFEL TOWER, LOUVRE and CO…

...you should definitely visit the Parc des Buttes-Chaumonts, the Parc Montsouris and the Parc de Belleville. The Canal SaintMartin, the newly designed banks of the Seine “Berges de Seine” and Rue Daguerre (many grocery stores, restaurants and cafés) are also great for walking. A wonderful bike ride leads to the town of Meaux. The Butte Bergeyre district in the 19th arrondissement offers probably the most beautiful view of Paris.
