With Ready Player One, Auto Ernest Cline has written an idiosyncratic homage to 80s pop culture that is so much fun to read that none other than master director Steven Spielberg took on the film adaptation. The story
In 2045, the real world is difficult to endure. Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) only feels truly alive when he can escape into the gigantic virtual universe OASIS, in which the boundaries of geography, laws and even identity are abolished - as long as you let your imagination run wild. This is where most people spend their days. OASIS was developed by the brilliant, eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance), who leaves his enormous fortune and total control over OASIS to the first person to emerge victorious from a three-part competition: Halliday wants to ensure that a worthy heir becomes his successor. As Wade solves the first task of the reality-altering treasure hunt, he and his gang of friends, called the High Five, find themselves thrust into a fantastical universe full of discovery and danger as they strive to save OASIS and their world.
