The story
Henri “Papillon” Charrière (Charlie Hunnam) is wrongly convicted of murder in 1930s France and has to serve his life sentence in the notorious St. Laurent penal colony in French Guiana. On the way there, Papillon meets the strange Louis Dega (Rami Malek), a convicted forger. After he was able to defend him from an attack by other prisoners, they reached an agreement: Dega would now be under Papillon's protection, and in return Dega would finance Papillon's escape attempts. Over time, a deep friendship develops between the two men, which helps them to survive the difficult labor service and the sadistic treatment of the guards and which always gives them the strength not to give up...
