With Erasmus+ for an internship abroad

THE NEW EU PROGRAM ERASMUS+
MAKES INTERNATIONAL MOBILITY EVEN MORE FLEXIBLE

Internships abroad are becoming increasingly popular. The combination of international work experience, foreign language practice and personal experience broadens your horizons and is highly valued by companies when selecting young talent. In 2013 alone, more than 6,000 German students completed an internship abroad through the EU funding program ERASMUS. With the new Erasmus+ program generation, funding becomes even more flexible and makes internships possible even within the tight schedule of a bachelor's or master's degree.

WHAT IS ERASMUS+?

Young people in particular move across Europe's internal borders much more frequently and more freely than they did 20 years ago: while studying, training, at work or in their free time. This mobility is important for Europe to grow together; it helps to develop intercultural skills and common goals. To support this, the EU is providing more than 14.7 billion euros from 2014 to 2020 as part of the new EU program Erasmus+. It brings together the offerings of previous EU education programs in the areas of training and further education, youth and sport.

WHAT DO THE FUNDING CRITERIA LOOK LIKE?

As in the previous program, Erasmus+ supports internships abroad as such or in conjunction with a semester abroad. The receiving institution can be a company, an association, a non-governmental organization or a public institution. If the university agrees to the collaboration, a so-called 'learning agreement' will be made between you, the institution and your university. It sets out the goals and duration of the internship in writing.

Unlike before, with Erasmus+ you can receive funding multiple times, for a total of twelve months in each study cycle. The minimum duration is reduced to two months, a perfect period for the semester break. Theoretically, six internships of two months each are possible in the bachelor's program alone. University graduates also receive up to twelve months
Funding, provided you apply for it while still studying.

WHAT IS POSSIBLE?

More than 30 countries are open to you - the 28 EU member states as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Turkey. From 2015 onwards, other parts of the world will also be integrated to a limited extent.

As in the previous model, you receive a so-called mobility allowance for accommodation and meals. The amount of the sum
depends on the cost of living in the host country and is between 250 and 450 euros. There is also organizational support, for example with travel preparations or taking out insurance. As before, achievements achieved abroad will be recognized for your studies.

You can obtain information about placement and funding conditions as well as the application process from the International Office
your university.
