The story
ISLE OF DOGS – ATARIS JOURNEY tells the story of Atari Kobayashi, the 12-year-old foster son of the corrupt Mayor Kobayashi. When a government decree banishes all of Megasaki City's dogs to a huge landfill, Atari sets off alone in a miniature junior turboprop and flies to Trash Island in search of his bodyguard dog Spots. There he befriends a pack of mixed-breed dogs and, with their help, sets off on an epic journey that will decide the fate and future of the entire prefecture.
The Hero Pack – The Dogs of Trash Island
Each member of the communicative Trash Island pack has a well-worn dog name that tells us that these dogs were once loved and at the top of the social rankings. They are called Chief, Rex, King, Duke and Boss.
Below we would like to introduce you to these dogs and their characteristics in more detail.
CHIEF
A coal-black hunting dog with long legs, black muzzle, boxer chin, and floppy ears speckled with white dots. He has the compact bone structure of a middleweight but the leanness of a long-distance runner.
The English voice of Chief, the grimly self-sufficient stray who undergoes an unexpected transformation, comes from Bryan Cranston. “Chief is a strange guy, but he has a natural nobility,” notes Cranston.
REX
Rex is a wiry, wire-haired mutt with spiky, mottled fur and the eyes of an Arctic sled dog. Its ribs stand out like a cast iron radiator.
In English, Edward Norton is the voice of Rex, who, as the busy leader of the pack, always wants to keep calm. “Rex describes himself as a dog lying on a bean bag next to an electric fan heater. So he's not a rich man's dog. He was perhaps comfortably middle class, perhaps upper middle class. But he has work ethic. He is quite scrappy and willing to fight vigorously for his needs. At the same time, he has a basic need for comfort, and that's why Trash Island is psychologically difficult for him. He is not capable of suffering indefinitely.”
KING
An elegant, red-furred mutt with a sable brown muzzle and a twirled mustache. It is covered in scabs, scars, scrapes and scratches.
King, voiced in English by Bob Balaban, was at the height of dog fame as a “spokesdog” and poster boy for Doggy Chop dog food before he was dumped on Trash Island. “I can well imagine that he felt he was special,” says Balaban. “Like dog photographer William Wegman's Weimaraners, I suspect that King secretly enjoyed wearing hats and costumes and enjoyed being the focus of 20 cameramen and that everyone was concerned about his well-being. And the occasional treat was the icing on the dog’s cake, you might say.”
DUKE
A bohemian mountain dog. A delicate face, sleek ears, and the overly elastic gait of a ballet dancer. He is missing seven teeth and has the dry cough of a consumptive.
Jeff Goldblum felt a certain kindred spirit with Duke, the talkative, inquisitive hunting dog who always keeps his ears to the ground for the latest rumors. “At this time of great social crisis in the dog world, I think Duke just wants what he always wanted: a balanced diet, regular grooming, and an annual checkup - which are pretty much the same three things I want.” says Goldblum.
BOSS
A powerful, black-spotted mutt with black paws and a tail like a stubbed out cigar. He's wearing a dirty, greasy, torn, striped wool dog sweater with baseball balls embroidered on it and the word "Dragons" written across it in cursive across the top.
Bill Murray sets this dog to music in English, which once had a glorious job as a sports mascot. Murray says: “If you want to achieve success you need a mascot, something that will be with you when things get difficult and something that you will want to have with you when things go well. That's boss." Murray, an animal dog fan, says of the four-legged friends: "They're a godsend, I think. They are here to enlighten those who accept them.”
