German students are drawn all over the world. Every semester many people set off into the big wide world with Erasmus and international exchange programs. Almost every third German student spends time abroad during their studies. If the federal government has its way, every second student should have this experience by 2020.
At the same time, Germany is becoming increasingly attractive as an educational location for foreign students. “One in nine students in Germany now comes from abroad, and the trend continues to rise,” says Education Minister Johanna Wanka. In an international comparison, German universities now occupy third place, after the USA and Great Britain.
Master's programs at German universities are particularly popular among foreign students. Around 67,000 of the master's students come from abroad and many of them plan to stay in Germany after graduating. In fact, according to the Higher Education Report, only 44% do this.
"Global mobility promotes scientific and cultural exchange," says Wanka. However, most students return home after their semester abroad or studying abroad. They will then have new cultural experiences and a horizon that extends beyond their own environment.
