The story
East Berlin, early autumn 1989. Wilhelm Powileit (Bruno Ganz), highly decorated SED party member and patriarch of the family, turns 90 today. For the GDR, to which he returned from exile in Mexico in 1952 and which he helped to build out of conviction, the 40th birthday is approaching - it will be the last. Wilhelm and his wife Charlotte (Hildegard Schmahl), deeply bitter, prepare for Wilhelm's special day. Neighbors, comrades and singing pioneers line up to congratulate Comrade Powileit, present flowers and award him another medal. Charlotte hopes for the support of her family: her son Kurt (Sylvester Groth), who came to East Berlin from the USSR labor camps in 1956 and works as a historian in East Berlin, Kurt's Russian wife Irina (Evgenia Dodina), whom he is secretly cheating on, and Charlotte's adult grandson Sascha (Alexander Fehling) also has a permanent place in the party-compliant anniversary spectacle. But Sascha won't be setting up the table for the cold buffet today as usual. He ran away to the West just a few days earlier. The news bursts into the party like a bomb.
While Kurt's mother-in-law Nadeshda Ivanovna (Nina Antonova) sings her Russian tunes in a vodka-fueled group, the desperate Irina settles scores with her daughter-in-law Melitta (Natalia Belitski) and the whole society. Household help Lisbeth (Gabriela Maria Schmeide) sweeps up the pieces and Charlotte's friend Stine (Angela Winkler) also tries to save what can be saved. But the closer the festival comes to an end, the more secrets emerge... The change can no longer be stopped. It is the time of waning light.
