The story

Halloween 2019: Looking for thrills and a special kick, student Harper (Katie Stevens) and her friends discover a remote haunted house that promises horror and terror to visitors. The prospect of a shocking highlight causes the teenagers to ignore all concerns and hand over their cell phones at the entrance. While the horror attractions and exhibits in the first rooms can only elicit a weary smile from the curious group, the supposed fun turns deadly serious when a young girl is apparently tortured to death in one of the chambers. Knowing that they have fallen into a trap, the friends have no choice but to penetrate deeper into the complex property and look for a way out. However, escaping from this hell seems impossible: every room is riddled with secret and deadly traps. Who will survive the perfidious game?

With HALLOWEEN HAUNT, the perfect film for the scariest day of the year is starting in German cinemas. To get you in the right mood for the cinema release, you will find out five facts about Halloween and popular Halloween traditions in the following text feature.

5 spooky facts about Halloween

In HALLOWEEN HAUNT, Harper, Bailey, Mallory, Nathan and Evan are actually almost on the way home when they discover a Halloween attraction on the side of the road: a haunted house - a place that is deliberately set up so that its visitors can kill themselves scare. However, the five friends soon realize in the film that their haunted house is about much more than just a short shock experience and that they can only survive Halloween night if they manage to escape. To get you in the right mood for the cinema release and the spookiest day of the year, we present you here five facts about some Halloween traditions.

An extremely popular attraction

Haunted houses have been inextricably linked to Halloween in the USA since the 1970s. However, it is quite surprising who made it so popular in the first place: Walt Disney actually established the concept in 1969 with the opening of the Haunted Mansion in Disneyland - and thus initiated a lucrative business. Today, haunted houses in the USA are said to bring in a good $300 million annually and are even more numerous than the branches of the national discount chain Target. However, unlike in HALLOWEEN HOUNT, the position of the professional scarer in a haunted house is not as secure as you might think. Some frightened visitors tend to counterattack and, unfortunately, individual scarers have died in accidents on site. Some visitors even thought she was part of the attraction and so her death was not immediately noticed.

The origin of jack-o-lanterns

Have you ever wondered why we carve ghostly faces into pumpkins on Halloween? This Halloween tradition is actually a 300-year-old custom that originated in Ireland. Even back then, the Irish told themselves the legend of Jack, an extraordinary man who managed to outsmart the devil and was therefore permanently denied entry to hell and heaven. And so he is cursed to walk the earth forever - with a lantern in his hand. However, while the Irish have traditionally carved their lanterns from turnips, pumpkins have only been used since the custom made its way to the United States.

Trick-or-treating has been around longer than you think

In Britain there was a tradition where the poor would go from house to house on November 2nd asking for “soul cakes”. If they found someone who was kind to them, they prayed for the souls of their deceased relatives. In the Middle Ages, the first children also wandered through the streets, singing, dancing or reciting poems in order to receive food, wine or money from others.

On Halloween, children are particularly evil and spoiled

And while we were talking about trick-or-treating: On Halloween, children are more likely to experience a process called deindividuation, in which people are less likely to reflect on their own behavior and more likely to go overboard. If the person you're pranking doesn't recognize you under the disguise, then you don't really have to face any consequences. Studies show that children with masks, for example, take more sweets. This phenomenon also occurs when the children are in a group and without an authority figure.

On Halloween it might be better to stay at home

In the USA there are also countless superstitious ideas that only revolve around Halloween. For example, if a bat flies around your home, ghosts are very close. If a black cat meows at the window or on the porch, someone in the house will soon die. If you hear footsteps behind you on Halloween, you should definitely not look around. There could also be a ghost lurking here that wants to drag you into the realm of the dead. If you drive past a cemetery, it is also better to hold your breath so that evil spirits cannot take possession of you. It is also advisable to turn your jacket and trouser pockets inside out, otherwise you will take something dark home with you that you definitely don't want there.
