The story
A young generation trapped in Gaza between Israel and Egypt and ruled by Hamas is drawn to the beaches. She's had enough of occupation, war and religious fanaticism and has found her very own form of protest: surfing.
The Gaza Strip is a narrow coastal strip between Israel and Egypt with a port where ships no longer dock and an airport that no longer serves flights. Hardly anyone comes out, almost nothing and no one comes in. With their surfboards, the surfers create a small piece of freedom between the beach and the six-mile border controlled by the Israelis. Freedom that no one can take away from them. The film shows the dreams and hopes of the young people in this border region, where the older generation has given up all hope.
GAZA SURF CLUB provides exceptional insights into a region that we otherwise only know from the news. When the word Gaza is mentioned, images appear in our mind's eye that have been burned into our visual subconscious for decades: shaky footage in poor video quality, young people throwing stones, Kassam rockets, ruins and fanatical Hamas funerals. Director Philip Gnadt juxtaposes this Palestinian reality with a hopeful group of young people who, despite their crisis-ridden everyday lives in a constant state of emergency, want to experience a bit of normality, despite all their patriotism. Surfing means freedom for young people - even if only for the duration of a wave.
GAZA SURF CLUB is a film full of hope that shows that even in crisis areas there are young people with whom we can identify, who have the same dreams and desires as their peers around the world.
