The story

Ever since loyal family man Mackenzie “Mack” Phillips (Sam Worthington) lost his youngest daughter many years ago, he has been immersed in grief and guilt. Their last trace was found in a cabin in the forest - not far from the campsite where the family was vacationing at the time. One day a letter comes in the mail: It's an invitation to that same hut - and the sender is God. Mack is shocked and afraid, all the painful memories resurfacing. Nevertheless, he sets off, unsure what he will find in the hut. The following weekend is about to change his life completely again.

At first William Paul Young didn't want to publish his story - and when friends finally persuaded him, he couldn't find a publisher. Without further ado, he built a website for $300 and printed it himself. A year later, “The Cabin: A Weekend with God” was number one on the New York Times bestseller list – and stayed there for over 70 weeks. A Christmas story for his children suddenly became a bestseller, selling over 10 million copies in the USA and over a million copies in Germany. With THE HUT - A WEEKEND WITH GOD comes a sensitive and encouraging film adaptation of Young's unconventional story about faith and the consolation of spirituality. The main role is played by Sam Worthington (“Avatar”, “Hacksaw Ridge”), the god who calls himself “Papa” is played by Oscar® winner Octavia Spencer (“The Help”, “Hidden Figures – Unrecognized Heroines”). Radha Mitchell ("Man on Fire", "When Dreams Learn to Fly") and the American country star Tim McGraw ("Blind Side - The Big Chance", "Country Strong") can also be seen in other roles. The film is directed by Brit Stuart Hazeldine.

We tested it:

We were able to see “The Cabin – A Weekend with God” before the film opened and to say it up front: it was an emotional, spiritual excursion into religion and the low points of human existence. A film based on the worldwide bestseller: “The Shack”

Mack (Sam Worthington), who was not allowed to enjoy a good childhood himself, loses his daughter (Amélie Eve) under absolutely cruel circumstances and with it his faith in life and God himself. One day, however, he finds a mysterious card in the mailbox that tells him invites you to return to the scene of the terrible crime. Driven by feelings of revenge, Mack makes his way to the small hut. While he waits in vain for his daughter's murderer, it turns out that the letter comes directly from God (Octavia Spencer). In the following days, Mack learns what it means to understand and, above all, to forgive.

Admittedly, the title seems a bit intimidating and sounds more like a B movie and Sat1 Sunday film. After just a few minutes, however, it becomes clear that we are dealing with a great film. From the harmonious cast (especially Sam Worthington and Octavia Spencer) to a magical production design, “The Hut” manages to create a very special feeling and completely captivate the viewer. Even if the script could have been worked on a bit and the dialogue isn't always as crisp as we would like, the film is definitely recommended. Especially in times when we have so little time to concern ourselves with ourselves (or with God) and life often only consists of quick and unquestioned reactions, this film is important and can give a great impetus to think about how we can can deal with one's own and other people's abysses.

The competition has ended and the winners will receive an email from us. If nothing happens this time, the next competition is already waiting for you!
