The story
Frankfurt am Main, 1946. David Bermann (Moritz Bleibtreu) and his Jewish friends only narrowly escaped the Nazi regime and, like many, now dream of emigrating to America. But how do you find the money you need in these difficult times?
The eloquent businessman comes up with a brilliant idea: What do the Germans need most now? The finest laundry of all kinds, beautifully packaged in incredible stories. Together, the six gifted entertainers go from house to house and praise their goods to the housewives with enchanting chutzpah, so that the flattered ladies have no choice but to take advantage of this irresistible offer. Business is flourishing, the bright new future is approaching. But Bermann soon catches up with his own past: Why did he have a second passport back then? And what was his visit to Obersalzberg all about? Did he possibly collaborate with the Nazis? The clever and attractive but relentless US officer Sara Simon (Antje Traue) doesn't let up during the interrogations; she wants to get to the true core of Bermann's memories and approaches his art of fabrication with iron severity.
