Having your own domain and your own website or blog is no miracle for students today. However, choosing the right provider requires a closer look and concentration. After all, it's about your data security, data protection and of course also about transparency and price stability.
First of all, however, you should make sure that your web package and, if applicable, your cloud storage is registered with a provider such as OVHcloud Web Hosting in the European Union. This ensures that your data does not fall under the US Cloud Act. The US Cloud Act allows US authorities to disclose all data (e.g. payment or patient data) stored in your cloud. This is particularly relevant for students since, as is well known, diploma theses can contain research results or patent applications, including the associated digital correspondence, are made during the course of study. So make sure that your provider is a company within the European Union and whose servers are also located in the EU.
Most providers offer web packages with different scope of services. As a rule, there is a basic package , a pro package and performance packages for company or shop solutions (PrestaShop). A precise comparison between the basic and pro packages is always worthwhile, as the basic packages are often designed for small personal WordPress blogs. Here the memory limit is quickly reached in student communication.
Pro packages offer more storage space right from the start and also professional options for CMS setup if, for example, Joomla is required. If you operate a larger number of domains, you should also take a look at a larger package, as the basic versions often limit the number of managed domains. In this context, larger Pro and Performance packages also offer Multi SSH / Multidomain* certificates. (*Multidomain certificates allow you to secure a group of domains under one IP address with just one SSL certificate)
Tip : If you run a website with a CMS, pay attention to the PHP versions available from your provider. PHP is being updated at ever shorter intervals. This requires regular technical updates to your website. Especially if your provider no longer supports older PHP versions.
By the way, a good hoster will of course also offer registration of your desired domains - regardless of whether “.de”, “.com” or “.es” is the country code. This is usually done via your provider account.
You will be automatically informed by email after final registration. Of course, the same applies to canceling domains. Here you should check regularly (at least once a year) whether your registered domains are really needed. Over the years, numerous web addresses accumulate that were only used for a project or were registered simply because the name sounded good. Experience shows that the decision to delete an unused domain should be made immediately. Adhering to paid deadlines can quickly lead to an unwanted extension of the term. Purging the web package also saves costs and administrative effort
Finally, tip: If you want to research the availability of a desired “.de” domain, you can query free or occupied “.de” domains from Denic . Denic also offers the registration of domains as a service - but at twentieth-century prices. This is much cheaper with your in-house provider and that is exactly what is always important for students.
