GO TO THE MOON tells of Armstrong's life and the enormous conflicts and hardships the pilot faced before and during his legendary mission. At the same time, the film poignantly describes the highly dramatic events of the American space program between 1961 and 1969.

The stars of the film and their roles in GO TO THE MOON
Find out everything about the actors and their preparation for the historic roles before the film opens.
Ryan Gosling plays Neil Armstrong
Gosling continues to receive critical acclaim for his complex and difficult roles. His leading role in HALF NELSON (2006) earned him an Oscar® nomination for Best Actor. In 2016, he shone in LA LA LAND (2016) and was nominated again in this category, for which he also won a Golden Globe® for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy. His other films include BLADE RUNNER 2049 (2017), DRIVE (2011) and the romantic comedy CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE (2011).
In GO TO THE MOON, Ryan Gosling takes on the role of legendary US astronaut Neil Armstrong. Gosling's fascination with Armstrong and his colleagues was evident throughout the production. “Neil could fly before he had a driver’s license. It seemed like an integral part of his personality,” explains the actor, who took flying lessons himself in preparation for his part. “At a certain point in my training I was supposed to intentionally stall the plane, and I had a moment of clarity: That was a terrible idea. I understood in that moment why Neil was destined to become one of the world’s greatest pilots and I wasn’t.”
Claire Foy plays Janet Armstrong
The Englishwoman is considered one of England's most respected actresses thanks to an extraordinary range of roles on TV, film and theater. In addition to GO TO THE MOON, the Golden Globe® winner will also be seen this fall as Lisbeth Salander in CONSPIRACY, Stieg Larsson's popular “Millennium” novel series.
First of all, shooting star Foy can be admired alongside Ryan Gosling in the role of Janet Armstrong. While her husband Neil traveled into space, she managed affairs on Earth and became one of the most recognizable faces of the NASA family. For Janet and the other women astronauts, that time was incredibly stressful, overwhelming and emotional. “Like all astronaut wives, she stands in the background. For a long time, no one researched what happened to them back then,” emphasizes Claire Foy. In GO TO THE MOON, this remarkable part of history will also be illuminated.
Jason Clarke plays Ed White
Jason Clarke graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne and has worked extensively in the theater as an actor and director. He first came to the attention of American audiences in the Showtime series “Brotherhood.” Today he is one of the most respected actors in Hollywood, currently appearing in one film after another. His filmography includes KNIGHT OF CUPS (2015), TERMINATOR GENISYS (2015), EVEREST (2015) and MUDBOUND (2017), to name just a few titles.
Now Clarke is taking on the role of astronaut Ed White in Damien Chazelle's space drama, who had already floated through space in 1965 as a participant in the “Gemini IV” mission. “I was born on July 17th - the day they went to the moon. My parents always made fun of me because my father wanted to call me Armstrong Clarke,” says Jason Clarke about his special personal connection to the film. Like Ryan Gosling, he was drawn to the script and joined in without hesitation: “After reading Josh's script, it was clear that this was a special film about one of the greatest achievements in human history. Everything was filled with a sense of greatness – a sense of what we are capable of – and Ed played a crucial role in that.”
Kyle Chandler plays Deke Slayton
Kyle Chandler is best known to audiences for his role as Coach Eric Taylor in the popular US series “Friday Night Lights”. He also appeared in the highly acclaimed Netflix series “Bloodline”. In the cinema, the actor, who currently lives in Texas, has appeared in films such as MANCHESTER BY THE SEA (2016), THE WOLF OF WALL STREET (2013), ARGO (2012) and SUPER 8 (2011).
From November 8th, Chandler can be seen in GO TO THE MOON as Deke Slayton - the director of flight crew operations. “Deke’s job was to select the men for the missions and rotate them based on their respective abilities,” the actor explains. Slayton was also one of the decision-makers who determined whether a mission received the “green light.” So the burden of many lives lay on his shoulders.
