This week we don't have a cinema competition, but an album competition for you! ACROSS THE STARS, the result of the collaboration between star German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter and film composer legend John Williams, will be released on August 30th. Anne-Sophie Mutter, four-time Grammy Award winner and one of the world's best violinists of our time, says it is "a tremendous honor" for her to work with five-time Oscar winner and 24-time Grammy Award winner John Williams. The conditions for this recording were as good as they were when she worked with Herbert von Karajan over 30 years ago. On the release day we are giving away the album ACROSS THE STARS twice . To take part in the competition, all you have to do is answer the following question in the comment box below:
When will Anne-Sophie Mutter perform with this program for the first open-air concert of her career on Munich's Königsplatz?
To the album
For Williams, Anne-Sophie Mutter is “the greatest violinist that Germany has produced in the last 100 years,” and he was very flattered that she wanted to play his melodies. He had previously written the piece Markings (for solo violin, strings and harp) for Mutter. She premiered it at the Tanglewood Music Festival in the US in 2017. “Recording Across the Stars with Anne-Sophie was incredibly inspiring,” he explains. »Through their interpretation, these familiar themes suddenly seem different. That was of course wonderful for me as a composer.«
For this recording, he transcribed pieces that Williams had known in a certain version for years and translated them for the violin: "Playing them on the violin becomes a new experience." This is how Williams and Mutter describe his new arrangement of "Hedwig's Theme" from Harry Potter as "Harry Potter meets Paganini" and "Carmen Fantasy for the 21st Century" (for the single here).
The album features themes from Star Wars ("Rey's Theme" from The Force Awakens, "Princess Leia's Theme" from A New Hope, "Yoda's Theme" from The Empire Strikes Back, "Luke and Leia" from Return of the Jedi -Knight, "Across the Stars" from Attack of the Clones), but also more recent works ("Sayuri's Theme" from The Geisha, "The Duel" from The Adventures of Tintin and "A Prayer for Peace" from Munich as well as "Hedwig's Theme« from Harry Potter, here for the new track).
There is also the main theme and "Remembrances" from Williams' two Oscar-winning music for Schindler's List. Rather surprisingly, the choice also fell on new versions of themes from Zapfenstreich and Dracula, which were created in the 1970s and have hardly been performed since then, as well as the Irish-tinged “Donnybrook Fair” from In a Far Away Land and the love theme from Sabrina.
Mutter played the premiere of Williams' new arrangement of "Across the Stars" on November 6, 2018 at the DG120 gala concert in Berlin with the Staatskapelle Berlin under the direction of Manfred Honeck.
Mutter will also bring the album's newly created repertoire to the stage. On July 7, 2019 she will perform with the Boston Pops Orchestra under the direction of John Williams and David Newman in Tanglewood. On September 14th, Newman and Anne-Sophie Mutter will give another all-Williams concert, this time with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra on the Königsplatz in Munich - the violinist's first open-air concert ever.
Win one of two albums for the release of ACROSS THE STARS, the collaboration album between Anne-Sophie Mutter and film composer legend John Williams, on August 30th.
