The story
When Alita (Rosa Salazar) awakens in a strange world of the future with no memory of who she is, she is taken in by Ido (Christoph Waltz). The compassionate doctor realizes that behind the empty cyborg shell lies the heart and soul of a young woman with an extraordinary past. As Alita learns to navigate her new life and the dangerous streets of Iron City, Ido tries to protect her from her mysterious past. In contrast to her new, clever friend Hugo (Keean Johnson), who wants to help her trigger her memories. But it's only when the deadly and corrupt forces that rule the city set their sights on Alita that she receives a clue to her past: she has unique fighting skills that those in power want to control at all costs. If she can stay away from them, she could be the key to saving her friends, her family, and the world she has grown to love.
Our world in 500 years in ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL
ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL takes place 500 years in the future, in the 26th century. The world created for the film seems both strange and familiar, because the filmmakers kept one question with them at every stage of production: What does a purely realistic future look like, based on current reality?
We – the human being
What will we, the people, be like in 500 years? Actually just like today – at least internally. The people of Iron City, a city in Latin America where many survivors from around the world have gathered to live after a devastating battle - The Fall - maintain relationships as we know them. The Iron City resident works for a living, and his favorite pastime is “motorball.” The menu includes potatoes, vegetables and Alita's favorite dishes, oranges and chocolate.
So not much has changed in the human way of life. However, in the “composition”. Medical and technological advances make it possible to replace not just body parts, but entire bodies, as long as the brain is intact. This is how many cyborgs and also Dr. Ido (Christoph Waltz) is not so much a doctor as we know him, but rather a mechanic who helps people replace injured body parts such as arms or legs with mechanical parts. Ido can also repair Alita (Rosa Salazar), whom he found in a junkyard, and bring her back to life, and a father-daughter relationship quickly develops between the two.
Two worlds
The future of ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL takes place after a drastic event for humanity: The Fall, a terrible war that destroyed large parts of the world. Survivors from all over the world then moved to Iron City, the setting of ALITA, which is a melting pot of different cultures and is characterized by the coexistence of people and machines.
Iron City is connected to Zalem, a kind of “sky city” that floats above Iron City and is only connected to earth via transport channels.
While most people in Iron City live in normal houses and the architecture is similar to today's, the elite clearly stand out - through their actions, their appearance and their status symbols. What particularly stands out is the tough businessman Vector (Mahershala Ali), who makes his money as the organizer of the Motorball games. He is highly respected, has contacts and influence. However, there are not many people in Iron City with its economic status. The social divide is wider than ever. Most people live on a subsistence level and are barely keeping their heads above water. Those who are desperate register as so-called hunter warriors and risk their lives as the executive hand of justice. Hunter Warriors are bounty hunters who track down wanted criminals, kill them and make a little money.
Life is hard in Iron City. The only alternative is Zalem, but it's not easy to get there and without prosperity, escape is almost hopeless.
Motorball
The only way to get to Zalem is through the motorball tournaments, because the champion gets a place in paradise. Motorball is not just a sport and leisure activity, but also a tough fight, so it is not surprising that the tournaments in which everyone competes against everyone are correspondingly brutal. The aim is to get hold of a ball on motorized inline skates and sink it into the “basket”. The following applies to the professionals: No consideration for losses!
